What to do when receiving goods - our best practice guide

Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty is dedicated to working with our clients and industry bodies to encourage best practice in the handling, storage and transportation of cargo. This is why we work with our clients to minimise losses and to manage operational risk.

A key stage in the logistics chain is receipt of goods - it is often at this point that losses are discovered or damages noticed. We recommend that you follow the attached simple checklist to ensure that the basic steps are taken when taking receipt of goods.

Keys stages in receiving goods: 1. Examine goods upon arrival In case of delivery by lorry Packaging intact? Packages any missing? Contents intact? Contents any missing? In case of delivery by container examine Seal intact? Seal number same as in the documents? Seal hold on to irregular seals! 2. In case of damage immediately Record the extent of the damage in the consignment documents (receipt). Issue written notice of liability to carrier. Do not alter condition and packing of goods (except to minimise loss or damage). Retain packaging. Separate wet or contaminated cartons from sound cartons. Take photos. Immediately notify the claim to your insurance representative. In either case Unpack and examine the goods without delay whenever possible! Only then issue a receipt!
